Ethernet is most widely installed local area network (LAN) technology. Originally it is developed by Xerox and further it is developed by Xerox, DEC and Intel. Ethernet typically uses coaxial cables, it is also used in wireless.
The most commonly used Ethernet are called 10BASE-T and provide transmission speed upto 10 Mbps.
Devices are connected to the cable and compete for access using a carrier sense multiple access with collission detection (CSMA/CD) protocol. Fast Ethernet or 100BASE-T provides transmissions speeds upto 100mbps and ared used in LAN backbone systems.
Ethernet was named by Robert Metcalfe, one of its developers, so named because the way the cabling, also a passive medium, could similarly carry data everywhere, through out the network.
