Smishing seems to be a new term in the dictionary of Security, it is similar to phishing. Smishing is a Phishing attack from a text messages from cellphone. The term Smishing is derived from Phishing and SMS technology text messaging.
This scam works by sending a text message from a cell phone. The message appears to be of a bank or any financial related and seeks immediate action. The message may contain a web link or a phone number prompting you to click on the link or call to the number mentioned.
The text messages are generated from a website or an email account and not from cell phone. If you click on the link in the text message it will prompt you to a site looking like a genuine one and asks to enter your details and ATM, credit/debit card details. Or if you call to the number in the text message it will direct you to a automatic voice response system and asks you to enter your account details and passwords.
This simply another Identity theft scam like phishing or pharming.
